Local artist and Duluthian, Per Wickstrom

Local artist and Duluthian, Per Wickstrom stands in front of his own art at our office using the Walker Display picture hanging system. We had the pleasure to interview him afterwords and you can read the interview here!

Contact Per Wickstrom at 218.728.2563 for information on his art.

Q: What did you do before doing art?
A: I moved to Duluth in 1983 and was a heart surgeon with St. Mary’s hospital (now Essentia Health) until retirement 6 years ago.

Q: What made you decide to paint?
A: I always knew that I could draw well and when I retired I thought to myself, “What am I going to do now?” I then took a University for Senior’s painting class at the University of Minnesota – Duluth to learn how to paint.

Q: What do you intend to do with your paintings?
A: All my proceeds go to CHUM ( CHUM is a local 501(c)(3) nonprofit human services organization which “provides core social safety net programs which include emergency food, shelter, advocacy, and outreach to over 7,000 hungry, homeless and low-income people each year.” http://www.CHUM.org) I also put a lot of my paintings in charity silent auctions such as Rotary and Miller Dwan Foundation.

Q: Do you admire any local artists?
A: I have a great admiration for John Salminin’s art.

Q: What artistic techniques do you do?
A: I started out doing watercolor for a year, then acrylic for a year, and for the past 4 years I have been doing oil paintings.

Q: How long have you been painting for?
A:Ever since I retired 6 years ago.

Q: Do you hang your paintings anywhere around Duluth?
A: A high percentage of my paintings go towards the silent auctions held by the various Foundations, but I also have art hangings at “Just For The Season Gallery” and at Cash Wise Liquor which my nephew runs.

Q: Do you do any shows?
A: No, but I should.

Q: How long does it take to paint a piece?
A:It takes around 30-40 hours per painting.

Q: How do you achieve such incredible detail in each painting?
A: A steady hand which I needed as a heart surgeon as well.

Q: Have you or do you do any special requests to paint a certain subject/theme?
A:Yes, if it interests me.

Q: Do you enjoy using the Walker System to hang your art?
A:Yes. I first heard of the system in a section of the paper called “What is this Business?” Something I didn’t look at a lot, but I saw the system and I thought it was a great idea.

Per was always a good artist; he just had to resume/refresh his remarkable show of talent admired by his junior high classmates—I was one of them.
