Entry Level Photography Equipment Review – Nikon D300 and D3200

This is the Nikon D300 (archived) with the Nikkor 18-200mm f3.5-5.6G VR lens attached (the camera dropped from a tripod, so don’t mind any marks on the lens or body, but both still work!).  This combination is a great camera for a beginner photographer.  However, you probably won’t find it new  as Nikon has archived this model to make way with newer and improved models such as the Nikon D3200 which is one of their current entry level DLSR camera that includes great new features such as Wi-Fi connectivity to your smart phone.  Not only that, the newer “Wi-fi” models allows you to take photos remotely with your smartphone (which is great for those family photos, long exposures, or setting up for animal photography).

The AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 18-200 f3.5-5.6G IF-ED (archived) lens is a great all around lens that offers great flexibility in various shooting situations. The new and improved lens is the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR II.

Speaking of lenses, one of my favorite lenses is the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm F1.4G  (1.4D is shown below which is a great alternative).  I like the G lens for its silent focusing motor as opposed to the D.  The 1.4 is great for  isolating your subject, but if you wanted to save money, the Nikkor 1.8 lens will certainly suffice and you’ll save quite a bit.  One thing to note is to use Nikon’s lens compatibility filter on their website to make sure the lens you choose will work correctly on your Nikon body.

To carry all this equipment, I opted for a Lowepro backpack.  Lowepro offers a great “Bag Finder” option on their website where you simply input all your gear and their website finds the best fit bags in relation to your photography equipment.  The bag shown here is easy to use, comfortable (although I’m not too much of a fan of the one shoulder strap), and lightweight.

Shown in Lowepro bag is Nikon D300 attached with a Promaster 17-50 f2.8 lens. A Nikkor 18-200mm f3.5-5.6G is on the left and a Nikkor 50mm f1.4D is on the right.
